I Have Mice In My Room
"I hope we never lose sight of one thing, it was all started by a mouse." -Walt Disney
I have mice in my room. They roam free there are no cages allowed in there. Except for the one around my own mind. They like to be free like I wish my mind could be. Because that is how they were made to be free and happy. Some of them sit on my window seal they watch over my room as I sleep. There's one big one, he is big enough to be used as a pillow. There are over 80 of them in my room.
"Think, believe, dream and dare." -Walt Disney
There are three steps to acquiring an obsession. Step one is a person feels guilty, feeling blame or having over responsibility for hurting someone. Step two getting NAT's or negative automatic thoughts. When someone is in a position that reminds them of the incident or reason they are becoming obsessed with something, the NAT's will keeping bringing those things back to their memory, which in turn leads into step three. Which is finding an activity that is intended to have the effect of reducing perceived responsibility and pain.
"To laugh at yourself, is to love yourself." -Mickey Mouse
They are on my desk and shelves in miniature and large form all smiling at me with the same smile that they have had for 89 years. They are in my closet and in my clothes. They wake me up with a song in the morning and help me not lose my keys in the sea of mice. But more importantly they are in my mind. Holding on and not letting go, like Winnie the Pooh to his pot of honey. A lot of people think it is
really weird but I don't care. I love them! They keep my mind free from the cage that it is constantly stuck in. They help me, be me. Their name is Mickey Mouse.
"To all who come to this happy place, Welcome." -Walt Disney
There's is a word when Disney takes over. They can take over a town by bringing tourism into it, they can take over someone's business by teaching their employees "The Disney Way" or they can take over someone's mind like me. It's called Disneyfication. The Walt Disney corporation was founded in 1923 by Walt Disney himself, and grew rapidly from there. In 1955 the first Disney theme park was opened in Anaheim California, Disneyland. Taking over an orange grove from a small family. In 1972 Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida was opened taking over nothing but what the Imagineers thought a "swampy mess" and in 2005 after going bankrupt Disneyland Paris (Euro Disneyland) was reopened to the public taking over Marne-la-Vallée, France. And now Mickey Mouse taking over our television set and may be the most commonly recognized cultural figure on earth.
"Mickey Mouse to me is a symbol of independence." -Walt Disney
This mouse holds meaning and life to me. When you love something, you fight for it, you do whatever it takes to protect it and cherish it and nurture it.
"They represent my childhood". I have a deep sentimental attachment to that, for many reasons one being that I love Disney and Mickey Mouse. Two is because they have been wired into the hard drive of my brain. Also, I believe that these characters hold a place in my heart for my childhood. I lost loved one too soon, the family that I grew up
with and loved was ripped apart and thrown down the drain, and trust and promises broken. Mickey Mouse has never done that too me, he has stayed by my side through it all. Disney has never broken apart and walked away from the family. Disney has never broke promises or trust. Disney and Mickey Mouse have always been beside me. One thing that I have come to realize is that it goes so much deeper than that, that Disney is the replacement of my childhood that I feel I got left out of. I sometimes resent my childhood, I look back and ask "what did I do?"
"Think, Think, Think." -Winnie the Pooh
Obsession are believed to come from a continuum of unwanted or intrusive thoughts. Which means unwanted thoughts have a strong tie to the obsessions or OCD. A study done at Perdue found that intrusive thoughts were a better indicator to obsessions then depression and or anxiety. They also found that intrusive thoughts measures correlated more highly with anxiety and depression then obsessionallity.
"Happiness is a state of mind." -Walt Disney
I'd never think of myself as a person who could be depressed. I mean I'm obsessed with the happiest place on earth, the happiest mouse on earth and Disney movies that teach the viewer to be happy, dream and that "adventure is out there". But I can see where in my life it would have started if I was like that. In my senior year of high school, the craze started I would research, draw, and buy things that were Disney, and now the addiction or craze has grown to take over my room. If the research is right then this is normal? Am I actually a normal person? I've never thought of myself as normal. Sadness, anger, low self-esteem, low self-image the list can go on and on how I've felt about
myself but I've never truly thought I was depressed. Some ask "is it not weird to have all of this stuff at your age?" My response is "growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional." Walt Disney
"Disneyland will never be complete as long as there is imagination left in the world." -Walt Disney
Disney claims to possess and share a friendly universality, with products aimed and designed to appeal to the largest crowd possible. A theme park like Walt Disney World imposes its products, values, and practices worldwide so that consumers from almost every nation can relate to the Walt Disney company and the U.S. American culture. Another view of Disneyfication is the art of providing fantasy-enriched, sentimentally-compelling, fun packed entertainment for all ages. Disneyfication removes all obvious class differences from the public eyes. A Disney quote that I believe shows this well is When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio. "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Anything you heart desires will come to you." It "makes no difference who you are." Disney was made for each and every one on the face of the earth and no one should be left without it. The Walt Disney company was built from the ground up for children young and old. This company has to keep those standers and always will. "Here age relives fond memories of the past- and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future." Walt Disney
"I do not make movies primarily for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether we be six or sixty." -Walt Disney
It's not just Mickey Mouse that I am obsessed with, it’s the whole Walt Disney Company that I am obsessed with. Ask me a question about Disneyland and I most likely can answer it. Like how far apart are the garbage cans? Who would know that answer? I do. Thirty paces, count them. If I am not watching something on YouTube about Disneyland
I'm thinking about Disney. Have you ever wondered why you can't buy gum in Disneyland? Well, it is because Walt banned it. He said that he didn't want his guest to step in gum through the park. If I'm not reading or researching something about Disney then I'm most likely listening to Disney Music (songs from the Disney films). Did you know Phil Collins sings in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German in Disney's Tarzan. Disney has consumed my life, and can I say that I love it? Yes, I do love it!
"For every laugh there should be a tear." -Walt Disney
Overwhelming feelings of guilt or blame can be tied to unwanted intrusive thoughts that lead to discomfort and the act that helps one to relieve those feelings. Obsessions are linked directly to NATs and guilt. Its stated that almost any mental event can be classified as an intrusive thought if it is repeated, unacceptable or unwanted. Those who had a higher disapproval of their thoughts also felt more responsibility, more anxiety, depression and obsessional symptoms.
"Disneyland is your land." -Walt Disney
When I go to Disneyland I don’t need a map, like most people. I am the map. Ask me where any ride is, and I'll direct you to it. Where are the best gift shops? Where can you get a Dole Whip? Where can I meet Mickey, Donald or Goofy? I can tell you. I am an addict, I guess the first step is admitting you have a problem, right? But I don't think that it is a problem. It's my way of life and I love it and I don't really care what other people say about it.
"Over at our place, we are sure of one thing: Everybody in the world was once a child." -Walt Disney
As I lay in bed at night mice run through my head. They will march all night long as I sleep. Guarding my door into my shrine of mice. At night I dream of the next time I can visit their home in Anaheim. So, I can set my mind free for a few more days in his home. My addiction is okay with me, is it okay with you? Does this addiction hurt anyone else except my mind on occasion?

“Good Morning Folks!” …

“Here you leave today and enter a world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy” -Walt Disney. It sinks in, the smell of vanilla that is pumped into the street. The sound of the trolley and horse drawn carriage. Hundreds of people are all around you, but you focus on one thing at the end of the street. Its beautiful, its magical, it’s alive in a way you can’t describe. And everyone that is around you slowly sinks away… you are alone. Even though you don’t feel like you are. The castle that stands right in the middle of the park. The castle that represents what this park truly is. A park where kids can be super heroes, villains, and a kid all at the same time. Or where adults can be a child for the day and no one will care. The castle is the way you will find the magic of this park.
If you stand by the train station you can feel the man who made all of this. He is no longer here, he left us in 1966. But his spirit and legacy will forever live on. The train that goes around the park, a true dream come true for the man. He loved trains. He also loved to draw, create, and dream. That is why he asks us to never forget one thing “It was all started by a mouse.” A mouse that has stood tall against the test of time. Who can make kids scream with joy and adults cry with happiness. “Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional” Walt Disney.
A mouse who can stand alone in the world and almost every country could tell you who that mouse is. “Mickey Mouse to me is a symbol of independence” -Walt Disney. This mouse holds meaning and life to me. When you love something, you fight for it, you do whatever it takes to protect it and cherish it and nurture it. I have a deep sentimental attachment to this mouse for many reasons. Maybe because these characters are hard wired into the soft tissue of my brain. Also, I believe that these characters hold a place in my heart for my childhood. Mickey Mouse, he has stayed by my side through it all. Disney has never broken apart and walked away from the family. Disney has never broke promises or trust. Disney and Mickey Mouse have always been beside me. This place does for me what it promises to do. To bring you into a world where you don’t have to worry about the outside world. Walt did this in many ways. From trees or walls where you can’t see outside the parks boundaries, to airplanes that are not allowed to fly in Disneyland airspace. From pumped in smells as you walk down main street of vanilla, and during the holidays the scent of peppermint. To the over immersion on the experience each and every guest gets to have. The way plants and trees are replaced so they always look the best. To the rides with so much detail, love and attention that you get lost in the world of Peter Pan, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and so many more. This park does it all, and its all for the chance to become a kid again, to forget the outside world, and to just have fun.
To stand in a place where I feel so much joy is almost over whelming. “Happiness is a state of mind, it’s just according to the way you look at things” Walt Disney. To be where I can truly feel at home. To be where the things that surround me, can truly make me happy. A place where I’m lucky if I get to visit once a year. A place that gives me more meaning in life, a place that I read about, study and write about. A place that I always long to be. As crazy as it sounds this place gives me meaning to live, keep going and moving forward. To be curious and explore, because “around here we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths” Walt Disney, and because “adventure is out there!”(Up)
